Acid-Base Homeostasis: Latent Acidosis as a Cause of Chronic Diseases

چکیده
In the healthy human being, the blood has a pH value of 7.4. Even slight deviations from this value may lead to s e v e re disturbances in metabolism which may even be life-threatening. It is for this reason that the body`s extensive buffer systems ensure that the blood pH is maintained between the very narrow limits of 7.37 and 7.43. These buffer systems bind and neutralize the additional protons (H+ ions) or hydroxide ions (OH– ions) respectively associated with excessive acidity or alkalinity and thereby prevent them f rom immediate and marked influences on metabolism. In order to maintain the optimal metabolic functioning and there f o re the buff e r i n g capacity on a long-term basis, the organism is also dependent on the constant regeneration of the buffer systems.

Review Article Nutritional disturbance in acid–base balance and osteoporosis: a hypothesis that disregards the essential homeostatic role of the kidney
The nutritional acid load hypothesis of osteoporosis is reviewed from its historical origin to most recent studies with particular attention to the essential but overlooked role of the kidney in acid–base homeostasis. This hypothesis posits that foods associated with an increased urinary acid excretion are deleterious for the skeleton, leading to osteoporosis and enhanced fragility fracture ris...
متن کاملMetabolic acidosis and kidney disease: does bicarbonate therapy slow the progression of CKD?
Metabolic acidosis is a common complication associated with progressive loss of kidney function. The diminishing ability of the kidneys to maintain acid-base homeostasis results in acid accumulation, leading to various complications such as impairment in nutritional status, worsened uremic bone disease and an association with increased mortality. In addition to these adverse effects which are r...

متن کاملEffect of mineralocorticoids on acid-base balance.
Aldosterone is classically associated with the regulation of salt and potassium homeostasis but has also profound effects on acid-base balance. During acidosis, circulating aldosterone levels are increased and the hormone acts in concert with angiotensin II and other factors to stimulate renal acid excretion. Pharmacological blockade of aldosterone action as well as inherited or acquired syndro...
